German American Society Dress Code for Saturday Night Dances

Smart Casual Wear something smart, comfortable and inoffensive. It is always important to wear good condition, clean and well presented clothes. This conveys the respect you have for the people around you. For theme nights you may dress appropriately for the theme, such as Halloween costumes or Heimat Abend. Traditional German regional Tracht (Dress) is always welcome.

Hats & Coat

Hats are not normally worn - Any Coat if weather requires

Jacket

Any Jacket If desired including Sports Jacket, Suit Jacket, Blazer, or a casual jacket Avoid Denim

Top

Blouse Always the safest option.

Fashionable Top Avoid slogans and logos. Some tops are more appropriate to a smart environment than others. Avoid tatty or revealing styles. Avoid denim. Avoid slogans and logos, but fashion labels are generally acceptable.

Knit-Shirt

Jumper

Sweater Avoid slogans and logos.

Cardigan Sweater

T-Shirt should be avoided as they do not have a collar which is one of the defining features of 'smart' dress, but can look smart, for example if worn with a jacket.

Dress Shirt Collared. Always the safest option.

Polo Shirt or Tennis Shirt Or similar collared top. Short or long sleeve. Tucked in. Avoid logos and slogans, but fashion labels are generally acceptable, as are university or sports club (such as golf, rugby, cricket, tennis, or polo) names.

Sweater Avoid slogans and logos.

Cardigan Sweater

Fashionable Top Some tops are more appropriate to a smart environment than others. Avoid tatty or revealing styles. Avoid denim. Avoid slogans and logos, but fashion labels are generally acceptable

Fashion Jeans Always wear very smart or fashionable ones, if at all, and always in good condition.

Pants You can't go wrong with good quality pants.

Dockers Or similar.

Chinos Designer Pants Good quality with or without matching jacket. Avoid wearing two different patterns for the pants and jacket - plain goes with anything.

Dark Socks Can't go wrong with black. Mid-calf length.

Footwear

Shoes Leather, fabric, or microfiber. Black, Navy, or Brown are appropriate colors. Avoid lighter colors.

Jewelry Including watches. As much as you want within reason, however it should not be dangerous, distracting, or interfere with your activities. Generally it is best to restrict yourself to a few items. (Consider your personal security though.)
